AN American tourist lost in New Zealand's Mt Aspiring National Park has been picked up by a passing helicopter.
DAVID Tamowski, 55, who has spent nine days in the bush, failed to turn up for a flight to Auckland on Tuesday - sparking a ground and helicopter search of the park in the South Island this week.
On Thursday afternoon Mr Tamowski was spotted in the bush by a helicopter pilot and flown to Te Anau, a police spokesman told AAP. He was safe and well and police hoped to talk to him on Friday to determine how he got lost. Police earlier said Mr Tamowski was well-equipped but was not carrying an emergency locator beacon. There has been severe weather in the South Island this week with snow dumped in higher areas. Meanwhile, there has been no further sign of a German tourist missing for more than two weeks near the Homer Tunnel. Christine Lenicker,38, did not return from a hike she took on March 30 after parking her car in the Homer Tunnel car park. Police say they're trying to identify a male hiker who travelled with Ms Lenicker from Te Anau to the car park as he may know where she was going to hike. Friends living in Nelson reported Ms Lenicker missing on April 10. She has been in New Zealand since March 8 and police have been in contact with her family and the German embassy.
