EGYPT'S highest appeals court has
ordered a retrial for former president Hosni Mubarak on charges relating
to the deaths of protesters in 2011.
THE Court of Cassation set November 5 as the start of the retrial of Mubarak, former interior minister Habib al-Adly and six former police chiefs in the same case, state-run newspaper al-Ahram reports.
Last year, a lower court dismissed charges brought against Mubarak over the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolution that forced him to step down. At the time, the court acquitted al-Adly and the six other co-defendants. The retrial will mark the third and final stage of the legal process and will be heard by the Court of Cassation. The verdict will be irreversible. Mubarak and al-Adly were convicted in 2012 of failing to prevent the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolt that ended the strongman's three decades of rule. That ruling was overturned on appeal and a retrial ordered. Mubarak, 87, has been living at an army hospital in Cairo for most of the time since his ousting.
