THAI police have arrested an
18-year-old student and two other men linked to the alleged attempted
murder of a 64-year-old Australian man in southern Thailand earlier this
month.
THE Australian, named as Edward Leslie Woodward, was shot and wounded on May 21 while driving a Toyota Vios in Surat Thani province, 650km from Bangkok.
Mr Woodward, according to Thai media reports, suffered wounds to his arms after the student shooter, riding a motorbike, opened fire on the vehicle. The student, who was not been named, was allegedly hired to shoot Mr Woodward but had only been given the Australian's vehicle registration number. He told police he opened fire when he identified the vehicle but hesitated after realising the man was a foreigner. Following the attack an arrest warrant was issued for the 18-year-old, who surrendered to authorities on Friday after being named by police. Surat Thani police Chief Major General Apichart Boonsriroj told local media that police also arrested two men, named as Wannachai Mengchuay, 48, and Jiradet Paksong, 43. Both men pleaded innocent to the attempted murder plot. Police Major General Apichart said the murder attempt came amid allegations Mr Woodward was involved in a relationship with a woman who worked at a local golf course. Police said Jiradet was reported to have also been romantically linked to the woman. Mr Woodward was reported to have been in a relationship with another Thai woman who also lives in Surat Thani.
