A MAGNITUDE 6.3 earthquake has shaken New Zealand's capital Wellington and the northern South Island.
THE earthquake struck 40km northwest of Kaikoura, 76km deep, just after 3.30pm on Friday, GeoNet said.
The agency described the quake as of strong intensity. Blenheim police said it felt like a strong, long quake, but there hadn't been any reports of damage in Marlborough or Kaikoura. Hundreds of New Zealanders took to social media to report the quake. "That seemed to go on forever - Land of Hope & Glory playing in background in my office seemed a little surreal!" MP Peter Dunne tweeted.
