THE federal government is demanding
an explanation over the publication of an article questioning whether
World War I Anzacs could be compared to Australian jihadists.
Government frontbencher Greg Hunt has described as “stupid” the Anzac Day piece run by Fairfax Media under the headline, Do Australian jihadis have anything in common with World War I Anzacs.
“(It) was deeply offensive to the vast bulk of Australians and was, frankly, a foolish piece,” he told Network Ten on Sunday, demanding a “please explain”.
The opinion piece, by Melbourne journalist Gina McColl, says the parallels between Anzacs and ISIS jihadis are “compelling”.
It was published in Fairfax’s print editions yesterday — the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landing on Gallipol.
