A 38-year old kitchenhand has pleaded guilty to the rape and murder of Christchurch caregiver Amy Farrall and attacking two tourists on the West Coast.
Aaron Rhys McDonald, from Otaki, pleaded guilty to all charges via video link in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday morning.
Ms Farrall's body was found in the boot of a car in a Christchurch car park early on March 30.
After raping and killing the 24-year-old, McDonald headed to the West Coast where he attacked two hitchhikers, German woman Michaela Brandl and Japanese-Dutch woman Niki Honda.
He pleaded guilty to robbery with an offensive weapon (a metal bar) of both women. He also pleaded guilty to the grievous bodily harm of both. He pushed one out of a moving vehicle and stabbed the other in the neck three times.
McDonald also pleaded guilty to reckless driving after trying to evade police. He sustained serious dog bites during the five-hour standoff which required hospital treatment.
The judge has requested a pre-sentence report.
McDonald will be sentenced in July.
